Would you like to go canyoning at Salto do Cabrito (Caldeiras da Ribeira) in São Miguel, in the Azores Islands?
If you've ever dreamed of travelling to Hawaii, but the long flight times and expensive plane tickets prevent you from doing so, did you know that in Europe we have our own Hawaii? 850 miles from Portugal, in the Atlantic Ocean, lie the Azores, an archipelago of 9 islands whose lush jungles, lakes, cascading waterfalls and volcanoes leave no one indifferent.
São Miguel is the capital of the Azores and the largest island, also known as the Green Island, because of its laurel forests and its three active stratovolcanoes: Sete Cidades, Fogo and Furnas. This relief makes it a perfect island for both hiking and climbing. One of the most popular and worthwhile canyoning routes is the Salto do Cabrito canyon, between Ribeira Grande and Caldeira Velha and only half an hour from Ponta Delgada and São Miguel.
Fun Activities Azores Adventures instructors will pick you up from your accommodation and take you to the start of the Salto do Cabrito route, where you will be given your canyoning equipment and begin a 30 minute approach route to the start of the canyon. Once there and after some instructions from the guide, let the fun begin! You will descend the canyon in a 3-hour excursion through waterfalls, volcanic areas, several rappels of between 4 and 16 metres, and the most daring can do a zip-line jump! The route is circular so you will return to the starting point.
Without a doubt, this route to the Salto do Cabrito canyon is a great opportunity to discover the amazing landscapes of São Miguel, in the Azores Islands.
