This full-day trip takes you high up into the Cretan mountains and to the Plateau of Lassithi. Fantastic food and wine in a local taverna included!
You will be picked up from your accommodation in the morning to make your way upwards into the Dikti range. The Dikti Range is a mountain range located in eastern Crete, Greece. It is the second-highest mountain range on the island, with its highest peak, Mount Dikti, reaching an elevation of 2,148 meters. The range is home to a variety of flora and fauna and is popular among hikers and mountaineers for its challenging trails and stunning views. Additionally, the Dikti Range has significant cultural and historical importance, with several ancient sites and legends associated with the mountains.
The first visit will be to an olive factory where you will learn a about the varied flavors and properties of Cretan olive oil. See the natural herb garden and witness how the goods are packaged with a lot of manual effort and love.
There will be lots of opportunity to stop for photos or even to pay a visit to a local elderly Greek lady who makes her own cheese and honey while ascending. The views will be spectacular and you'll pass through numerous traditional and quite lovely mountain towns.
You could see eagles and vultures on the Lassithi Plateau because both species nest nearby. Until we get at the foot of Mount Spathi, the tallest mountain in the Dhiki range, you will start to circle the plateau while taking in the landscape. The Psychro Cave, the birthplace of the Greek deity Zeus, is located on Spathi's north face. The cave entrance is a 15-minute uphill trek from here; be advised that it is a pretty steep ascent. You must first pay a small admission fee at the cave (€6,0) before you can enter the breathtaking cave. Following your visit to the cave, you'll be transported to a great, authentic Cretan meal with local wine.
After lunch, you'll continue around the plateau and then descend taking in views of the north coast and the impressive Aposelemis Dam Which holds 27,000,000 cubic meters of water, again plenty of photo opportunities. You will then visit the oldest plane tree on the island (2400 yrs old) as well as the male monastery at Selinari.
