Descend deep into the frozen belly of Langjokull glacier on this ice tunnel excursion in Iceland

Discover what the last Ice Age really looked like with this subterranean ice cave excursion to the frozen belly of Langjokull glacier.

An environment once reserved for expert speleologists and geophysicists, today the mysteries that lie beneath the ice are open to the public. Travel deep under the glacier for an in-depth experience that explores the area's unique blue-ice caves and tunnels. Navigate Langjokull's enormous amphitheaters of ice and trace history back to before mankind found fire on this glacier hiking trip from Húsafell.

Location
Langjokull - also called The Long Glacier (1355m) is the second largest in Iceland. It has an area of about 950 km² and most of it rises between 1200 and 1300 m above sea level. The nearest town to the glacier is Húsafell - located in West of Iceland. (Please note that there is another Húsafell in South of Iceland, make sure you are driving to the right Húsafell). An hour and a half drive from central Reykjavik, the road leading to Klaki base camp is only suitable for 4×4 vehicles and closed in winter.

Activity
Meeting your guide either in Húsafell, Reykjavik, or Klaki base camp (depending on booking option) explore
Langjokull from the inside on this half-day glacier hiking excursion into and under the ice. Leading you to the untouched beauty and raw nature of the glacier, journey up the white slopes and go deep inside the man-made ice tunnels leading to the blue heart of the glacier. Ride in modified glacier vehicles specially made to explore the glacier environment and enjoy the view as you drive on top of the ice cap.

Conditions
The mountain road 550 which connects both Húsafell and Þingvellir national park to Klaki base camp is a rough gravel road ONLY suitable for 4×4 vehicles and is only open during summer, mid-June to mid-October. During the winter, groups meet in Húsafell as the terrain is only accessible by specially adapted glacier vehicles.

It’s a once in a lifetime experience to go inside a glacier. The colors of the ice inside are amazing.

Out all of the other activities that we did in Iceland this was by far the winner! The tour guides were excellent and it was truly a unique experience!
