Experience diving with great white sharks followed by a whale-watching safari for an unforgettable day at sea!
Your great ocean adventure starts out with a continental breakfast at the shark centre to get you ready for the non-stop excitement that awaits! From there, you will receive a safety and activity briefing before boarding the boat at Kleinbaai harbour, located 2 km down the coast from Gansbaai. The boat will head out and drop anchor near Dyer Island, located in a channel known as "Shark Alley" due to its popularity among the remaining great white sharks of the South African coast. Dyer Island itself is home to a 50,000 strong seal colony – seals being a favourite snack for sharks explains how the popularity of the area!
The crew will drop a specially-formulated chum mixture in the water to help attract the sharks, and then it is time to get equipped with the provided diving equipment and drop into the cage! The cage holds up to 8 people and passengers can take turns watching sharks from inside the water and up on deck. As the great white sharks hunt for seals and become frenzied by the chum, you will be shot through with adrenaline watching these Apex predators dart and thrash within mere feet of you!
After 2 to 3 hours with the sharks and a quick lunch, you will drive yourself to Gansbaai harbour to hop onto another boat for the second chapter of your sealife safari. This time around, the boat will take you to a protected nature reserve near the cliffs of De Kelders which is a hotspot for Southern Right Whales. Watch in wonder as you see whales and their calves glide by or even breach the water and catch some air! This part of the trip takes around 2 hours, although the boat may be out at sea a bit longer depending on the location of these gentle giants.
Outside of Southern Right Whale migration season, which is from June to December, the boat tour will have the aim of seeing other great marine life around the area. Expect sightings of Bryde's whales, Cape Fur Seals, African Penguins, Bottlenose dolphins, sea birds and more! No matter the time of year, there will always be so many beautiful creatures to spot off the coast of Gansbaai!
