Intermediate snowmobile drivers are welcome on this day-long expedition to the East Coast of Svalbard, otherwise known as the realm of the polar bears!
This expedition takes you all the way to Mohnbukten and back for a long snowmobiling venture into the wildest parts of Svalbard island. This is the turf of the King of the Arctic himself, so attention to your guide will be primordial during this trip. If you are lucky enough to spot a polar bear along the way, the group will be able to observe it from a safe distance under the care and protection of the armed guide.
The adventure begins with a pick-up at your accommodation in the direction of the base, to gear up and discover the snowmobiles. You will be provided with helmets and all the necessary thermal equipment to keep you safe and warm throughout the journey. Then, drivers will be shown the ropes of how to snowmobile, including the hand signals drivers need to learn to ensure a safe journey.
Finally, it will be time to set off eastwards, past Sassendalen, Brattlidalen, all the way to the East Coast at Mohnbukta. If the conditions allow it, you will drive along the sea ice here, before getting off to explore the coast on foot. With ice as far as the eye can see, the view is impressive here. Have some lunch and hot drinks with the island of Edgeøya glistening in the distance, while your guide tells you all you would like to know about the archipelago's geology and biodiversity.
The East coast of Svalbard is particularly attractive to polar bears as the sea ice makes for a good hunting ground. For this reason, it is commonly considered their land. As witnesses to these huge land predators, this excursion is nothing short of humbling. Join your guide on an adventure in some of the rawest nature in the world, and get ready to be amazed by the incredible views this corner of the island has to offer.
Svalbard Adventures recommends this long snowmobiling expedition to those with previous experience on a snowmobile, for the simple reasons that it is long, and some of the terrains can be rough.
