Rio de Frades is a place of incredibly beautiful natural wealth. A former mining region, today the creeks and canyons along its flow are perfect for a canyoning excursion!
During the first World War, Rio de Frades was a place were the Mining Company of Northern Portugal, owned by the Germans, extracted wolfram that was used in the production of weapons. Today, the area has left its dark past, nature has taken over the mines and it is now a place of amazing biodiversity and home to several protected species such as the Iberian wolf.
Rio de Frades is one of the most popular canyoning areas in all of Portugal. This canyon has a series of accessible abseils that will challenge you, and some spectacular pristine pools into which you'll be able to jump and swim! Most of the jumps along the way can be sorted out if you find them too extreme, this a canyoning experience open to everyone (even children!), and you´ll have a guide looking out for your safety and relative comfort while you traipse along the Rio de Frades.
