Vatnajokull National Park: What to do when you get there?
Vatnajökull National Park is one of 3 national parks in Iceland. It is renowned for its spectacular natural backdrops, made up of rivers, glacial ice and volcanic and geothermal activity.
Vatnajökull National Park is the second largest national park in Europe, as it covers 13.920 km2. The park has highland and lowland areas that are vastly different. The lowlands are accessible all year round. The highlands however are a completely different story; they can be accessed by a 4x4 in summer and early autumn. However early summer could be as late as early July.
There’s only on real way to visit Europe’s second biggest national park and that’s with a mountain biking excursion. You can stop where you like, stop off whenever you like and get as close to the nature as you like.
When visiting the area you must be dressed correctly depending on the weather conditions and have proper hiking shoes, so you can walk out the varied terrain. It is important to monitor the weather conditions closely, as a day that started out bright and sunny can quickly turn wet and cold.
