Chief town of the Savanne district, Souillac is a small village typical of Mauritius. Although less touristic than Le Morne and Bel Ombre in the west, it is still a place to visit and where there are things to do! Being located in the middle of the south coast of the island, it is surrounded by a still wild and preserved nature that you can discover with pleasure for example during hiking. Far from the turquoise and calm waters of the lagoons, Souillac and its coastline will surprise you with their waves that you will not find anywhere else in Mauritius!
One of the must-see sites in Souillac is the Gris Gris Beach, a superb sandy beach followed by cliffs on the seaside and the Roche qui Pleure, another curiosity to see in the area for its spectacle of waves crashing on the rocks. Hikers and nature lovers will also be enchanted by the many waterfalls in Souillac, including Cascade V which flows directly into the sea, Rochester Falls, and a little further north, Léon Falls. If you follow the hiking trails along the coastline, you can also expect great views of the ocean!
Aside from nature, there are many things to do in and around Souillac that are ideal for families. Between the Telfair Garden along the beach of the same name, the Robert Edward Hart Museum for history buffs, the Vanilla Nature Park in Rivière des Anguilles, or the Domaine de Saint-Aubin and its rum factory, you will have more than enough to keep you busy for one day! The few beaches on the way to Rivière des Galets are perfect for relaxing and swimming around Souillac: you can find sandy beaches like those of Saint-Félix, Pomponette and Riambel, or pebble beaches if you go to the village of Rivière des Galets.
And for those who would like more original activities, it is also possible to go quad biking in Souillac! But if you don't like the thrill of the ride, you can also rent an electric bike to discover Souillac and its coastline in complete peace and quiet. If you are fond of natural places and less frequented by tourists, Souillac is the Mauritian village that you absolutely must visit during your stay!
